On a former British pleasure pier at Weston Super-Mare the work.group indulge their referential fantasies to create an adult's playground. Like a John Portman megacomplex stripped of its function, this new island is devised around active exploration and discovery. By lowering the pier below the high tide (which fluctuates over seven meters), explorers are given twelve hours on the island to experience its different aspects. Aviaries open and close with the rising tide, cellars are flooded, a series of locks ascends to nowhere, box-kite zeppelins drift, and dwellings atop slender filaments waver, all under the watchful eye of a gigantic, disembodied rose window.
